Children’s Theater
Enter the magical world of theater and become a princess, prince, dragon, enchanting frog, troll or your favorite fairy tale character. In this fun-filled class, children will use their imagination and creativity while learning about acting out classic fairy and folk tales from children’s literature. This summer, children will make puppets and learn to be a puppeteer. This is a great camp to explore being an actor, storyteller or puppeteer while building confidence and comfort speaking and interacting with others. Children will enjoy this class over and over again. Limited to 10 students.

Color-Mania
This course is for anyone who loves drawing and wants to create vibrant images with good contrast, depth, and impact. Draw objects, people, places, and personally inspiring subjects using the drama and energy of color to its fullest effect. Techniques in colored pencil, collage, oil pastel, chalk pastel, and mixed-media will be explored to achieve results from realistic to abstract. Completion of this course will fulfill the summer assignment for AP Art Studio. Supplies are provided.

Crafty Kids
Everyone loves a "make it and take it party"! In this class, campers design and create “way cool” craft projects for special occasions or just everyday fun!

Crazy for Canvas
Campers will expand on the creative repertoires they have been building. The new artists will have possibly their first experience actually working on canvas. Suzy will guide them through the use of a broad spectrum of multimedia using different types of paint, brushes and surfaces to create awesome works of art. Students will be exposed to cultural and historical artistic styles to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces. The student’s creativity is now catapulted into a whole new level of art.

Dance
This is a great opportunity for dance lovers and those aspiring to be dancers to have experienced dancers teach modern dance, jazz and ballet. Marcia Holliman has invited an esteemed group of choreographers to really challenge the students who love this art form. This camp fills up fast so early registration is advised. FYI, The Cecchetti Ballet exams are held on June 13th and 14th this year.

Dance with Tino Valles
This summer, Tino Valles, choreographer/dancer and SMH dance instructor, will lead an amazing blend of dance. This is a much sought after course of instruction, progressive and modern. Dancers will learn, possibly for the first time, Hip Hop, Jazz and Irish dance. Popular and current music bring a whole new energy while the dancer experiments with a wider variety of body movement and rhythm. All levels of dance students are welcome. Students will be divided into age appropriate groups.

Dance - Ballet & Pointe
Adding a new level of artistry to the student’s dancing, this class is a performance-focused workshop in ballet & pointe! In addition to daily ballet & pointe classes, students will learn classical variations to be performed as solos & small groups at Friday’s informal studio showcase. Students will work on Spanish variations during week one (Paquita, Don Quixote, etc.) and Russian variations during week 2 (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, etc.) Please contact Justine Sheedy at jsheedy@smhall.org for more information. Dare to Draw!
Anyone can learn to draw. By combining simple shapes and lines, anyone can learn to draw anything. By using the techniques in Ed Emberly's art books, every child in this class will create fun (and funny) artwork and come away with a sense of accomplishment and valuable knowledge of artistic techniques.

An exciting, age-appropriate class designed to give young students a taste of working with glass, metal, and more. Students learn to use a variety of metal and glass working tools (safety equipment provided) including the jewelers saw, kiln, glass cutters and grinders. Projects this summer range from copper enamel, stained glass sun catchers, fused glass pendants and more as time allows. Skills taught in this class: Cutting, grinding, copper foiling and soldering glass for the sun catcher, fusing glass and enameling metal in a kiln. Students will get lots of kiln work this year! Projects change to accommodate returning students. Safety is a high priority over the summer, so students learn all about safety and safety equipment in this class.

Digital Storytelling
Campers will create their own movie through Microsoft Photo Story. Campers will learn the basics of digital photo taking, image editing, and effects using PhotoFiltre. Campers are encouraged to bring their own digital camera, photos and audio files. Completed projects will be shared on the last day.

Drama Camp
Calling all young performers! Lower School Drama Teacher Clea Underwood invites young actors to enjoy a week-long drama experience! Students will work on improvisational skills, developing new techniques for the use of voice and body. They will have the opportunity to portray a variety of fun characters. Students will enhance their acting skills which, in turn, enhances their confidence and self-esteem allowing them to express themselves more effectively. This maturing level of expression will be a much-desired attribute as they experiment with collaborating with their peers to give their very best performance for their audience. A “must” for the young, aspiring actor.
*Parents are invited to come from 11:00-11:30 a.m. on Friday to watch our young performers in action!

Guitar for Beginners
Isn’t it amazing how quickly young students can learn a new skill? Let George Gaytan introduce your child to the magical world of guitar! This basic beginner’s guitar class will teach your child musical note reading, proper strumming techniques, finger placement, music appreciation and ultimately how to play a couple of songs. Learning a new musical instrument is fun!
Materials: Students must bring a real, size-appropriate guitar with nylon strings to class each day.

Intro to Photoshop Elements for Teenagers
Become a digital artist and create altered works of art from your photographs. Digital photos taken during class time will be turned into stunning Pop Art posters, striking pen and ink drawings, dazzling water color images, and super fun kaleidoscopic mosaics. The art history of Warhol, da Vinci, Monet, and Escher becomes an enjoyable experience while learning the basics of Photoshop Elements. Class enrollment is limited to 8 students.

Scrapbooking is the "in" thing! This is your chance to begin creating a fun and creative scrapbooks to treasure for a lifetime. After deciding on a theme and learning how to use ALL of the nifty scrapbooking tools on Monday, you will head to a scrapbooking store on Tuesday. Barstow will provide $30.00 for you to spend on papers, stamps, stickers, embellishments, and more. By the end of the week, you will have a scrapbook you will cherish!

Totally Tie Dye!
Twisted, spiral and blotchy are just some of the designs you can make with tie dye. In this class, you will learn many different ways to twist, tie and band to create various tie dye effects. You will dye anything from t-shirts, jeans, shorts, pillowcases, socks, bags and hats. You will experiment with new and fun ways to tie dye using knots, rubber bands, marbles and more!

Master the important tools in Adobe Photoshop CS3 and develop a workflow sequence to get past technological hurdles. The classes will emphasize selection techniques, building layered images, masking, levels and curves. Learn accurate color and tonal correction, dodging and burning, and advanced sharpening methods. In addition, the class will cover basic camera settings, RAW vs. JPEG files, and white-balancing. Enjoy personalized classes and expert instruction in a spacious setting customized for the needs of digital photographers. Two course times are offered. Class size is limited to 8 students.

Cartoon Drawing & Animation
Learn the tricks of famous cartoonists. Kids will produce large full-sheet drawings of a pirate ship with its motley crew, big top circus and a jungle scene. We will brain-storm our way to our own creative original cartoon characters. Students will produce a three-panel comic strip and learn how to do word bubbles, inking and adding other elements of interest. Participants will also have fun making various animation devices as they learn about optical illusions and how animated cartoons work.
