Adobe Photoshop for Adult Beginners

Master the important tools in
Adobe Photoshop CS3 and develop a workflow sequence to get past
technological hurdles. The four evening classes will emphasize selection
techniques, building layered images, masking, levels and curves. Learn
accurate color and tonal correction, dodging and burning, and advanced
sharpening methods. In addition, the class will cover basic camera
settings, RAW vs. JPEG files, and white-balancing. Enjoy personalized
classes and expert instruction in a spacious setting customized for the
needs of digital photographers. Two course times are offered.

This course is for the talented high school teenager interested in
mastering digital photography using basic Adobe Photoshop CS3
techniques. The teen will become skilled at building a workflow

Learn the tricks of famous
cartoonists. We will brain-storm our way to our own creative original
cartoon characters. Students will produce a three-panel comic strip and

devices as they learn about optical illusions and how animated cartoons
work.

Black and White Photography
Ages: Grade 5 to Adult

Supplies for class: Any 35-mm camera, 1 box Ilford RC Multigrade IV
Pearl enlarging 8 x 10 paper (100 count), and 5 rolls of Ilford Delta
film 400-24 exposure or equivalent. All other photo and art supplies are
provided.
This two week course is
designed for the beginner to the advanced photographer. Individualized
assignments will be provided in order to develop a portfolio that
expresses the photographer’s interest. The beginner will learn the
principles of black and white film development and making enlargements
in the darkroom. The intermediate photographer will focus on
composition, visual perception and personal expression. Advanced
photographers may experiment with alternative processes, Polaroid
transfers, 3-D photography and pinhole cameras. Two optional field trips
are provided to scenic locations in the San Antonio area. This class
size is limited to only 13

Cabinet of Wonder Workshop

Cabinets of Wonder,
assembled by prosperous owners, began in 16th and 17th century Europe.
These early museums housed encyclopedic arrays of artistic and natural
wonders. Collectors were enthralled with new discoveries of the world
during this age of exploration and they welcomed viewers to their
cabinets to share in the wonders they had accumulated..
Marjorie Moore, an avid collector and artist, has been investigating
this subject for many years. She now welcomes you to share in the
fascinating history of the cabinet of wonder and to use your drawing,
painting and collecting skills to make your own Cabinet of Wonder. We
will be looking at lots of images and film to get inspired. Then each
student will create her own small cabinet using paint, collage, and
objects of their choice.

who loves drawing and wants to create vibrant images with good contrast,
depth, and impact. Draw objects, people, places, and personally
inspiring subjects using the drama and energy of color to its fullest
effect. Techniques in colored pencil, collage, oil pastel, chalk pastel,
and mixed-media will be explored to achieve results from realistic to
abstract. (Completion of this course will fulfill the summer assignment
for AP Art Studio.) Supplies are provided.

Location: The McLean Photography Center, Saint Mary's Hall campus, San
Antonio, Texas.
Workshop description: This 5 ½ day workshop is for photographers, teachers,
and artists who want to learn how to make different kinds of pinhole cameras
and explore alternative ways to create personal expression into their
images. Participants will construct several pinhole cameras in 35 mm,
medium and large (11x14) format. Experience what it is like to be inside a
camera and make 16x20 images using Howell’s mobile pinhole camera obscura:
Marco the Magnificent Carnival Wagon. Instant Polaroid pinhole photos will
be made and transferred to water color paper using the Polaroid lift
process. Some negatives will be digitally scan and printed as positives
while other negatives will be used to print in the alternative process of
cyanotype. The wet-darkroom is available for printing with 35 mm to 4x5 inch
negatives. Bring your 35 mm or medium format camera if you want to retrofit
it with a pinhole plate. Cameras with multiple pinholes, zone plates, and
slit imaging will be discussed.
Enjoy personalized instructions in a customized wet-darkroom and a spacious
art studio complete with state of the art computers. Gear up and be prepared
to experiment, get inspired, and interact while sharing experiences and
exploring pinhole photography!

Instructor: Ralph Howell is a fine arts photographer and teacher who has constructed more than
100 different pinhole cameras from found objects that take unusual
images without lenses or viewfinders. His artwork has been featured
in the PBS series, "EGG the Arts Show”. He has conducted numerous
workshops in pinhole photography, alternative processes, and 3D
photography throughout the United States and Europe. He received
his MFA at the University of Texas in San Antonio, has an
extensive exhibition record, and has been a recipient of several grants in
art and education.

The YOSA Summer String Camp
offers intensive and fun studies of orchestral music, chamber music, music
theory, composition and music software, and music history. Workshops with
guest lecturers and a master class with guest artists are also included. A
Cactus Pear Music Festival concert, master class, young composers’ recital,
chamber music concert, and finale orchestra concert highlight the three-week
camp. The only prerequisite is that students have at least one year
experience studying violin, viola, cello or bass. For more information or to
